Intake

Science

Nutrient intake after pregnancy

The ECLIPSES study examined the diets of 793 women during pregnancy and the postpartum period. While intake of macronutrients and certain vitamins was adequate, significant deficiencies were found in vitamin D, iron, and folic acid (less than 35% of the recommended intake). After birth, intake of fiber, vitamins E, and vitamin C also deteriorated. (Aparicio et al., 2020)

Nutrient supply during breastfeeding

Adequate nutrient intake during breastfeeding is crucial for the health of both mother and child. Nevertheless, many breastfeeding women exhibit deficiencies in important vitamins such as folic acid, B12, A, and D, as well as minerals such as calcium, iron, and iodine. Deficiencies in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA, DHA) have also been identified. The need for supplementation depends on individual dietary habits, but studies suggest that supplementation can positively influence nutrient concentrations in breast milk. (Carretero-Krug et al., 2024)

Vitamin B12 during breastfeeding

The systematic review by Dror & Allen (2017) shows that the vitamin B12 content in breast milk depends heavily on the mother's diet and nutrition. The level is highest in colostrum immediately after birth, then decreases during the first months of breastfeeding. Studies show that vitamin B12 supplementation—especially in cases of deficiency—can significantly increase the level in breast milk.

Selenium during breastfeeding

The MINI study from New Zealand by Jin et al. (2020) showed that many breastfeeding women and their infants lack sufficient selenium intake. More than half of the women were below the recommended intake, and the infants' intake was also mostly inadequate.

Carnitine and development of premature infants

The study by Manninen et al. (2022) showed that higher carnitine intake in the first weeks of life was associated with better growth and larger brain size in very preterm infants. Carnitine from breast milk was particularly associated with positive growth.
