Intake

Science

Vitamin C and shortening the duration of colds

A meta-analysis of nine randomized trials examined whether supplemental vitamin C doses influence the duration and symptoms of a cold. The results showed that increased vitamin C intake at the onset of a cold shortened the duration of illness, reduced indoor time, and alleviated symptoms such as chest pain, fever, and chills. This suggests that an additional dose of vitamin C may be beneficial for a cold, even if daily vitamin C supplementation is already being used. (Ran et al., 2018)

Zinc to relieve cold symptoms

Zinc can shorten the duration and severity of a cold when taken within 24 hours of symptom onset. Studies show that ionic zinc binds to rhinovirus receptors and can thus exert an antiviral effect. These results suggest that zinc could be a useful addition to cold treatment. (Hulisz, 2004)

Combination of vitamin C and zinc for colds

Vitamin C and zinc play an important role in the immune system, and their intake is often inadequate. Two double-blind, randomized trials investigated the effect of a combination on colds. The results showed faster symptom relief and a significant reduction in the duration of the cold over five days compared to a placebo. (Maggini, Beveridge & Suter, 2012)

Micronutrients and the immune system

The review by Gombart et al. (2020) shows that many vitamins and minerals—including vitamins C, D, A, E, B6, B12, folic acid, zinc, iron, copper, and selenium—play important roles in the immune system. Even slight deficiencies can weaken the immune system. The positive effects of vitamins C, D, and zinc, which can reduce the risk of infection, are particularly well documented.

Selenium and the immune system

The review by Sadler et al. (2024) describes how selenium influences the immune system. It supports antioxidant defenses, strengthens both the innate and adaptive immune responses, and promotes a healthy gut microbiota. Selenium may therefore play a role in the prevention and support of the treatment of infections and autoimmune diseases.
